Creative Engineering
Our project's goal was to help people sleep better. We discovered that there are 35 million adults in the US wish they had more sleep, and that need for sleep doesn't just make you cranky, and lower your grades, but causes death! 100,000 deaths by people driving and falling asleep at the wheel.
Our solution was to program an app that follows how you sleep, and improves your sleeping conditions. We had plans for a fully integrated iOS and Android app. This App communicate with a raspberry Pi with a network connection. The Pi would control a light to aid in the wake up processes, and have a fan to create white noise and circulation. We didn't meet our goals due to the time constraints but with more time we could have produced an amazing product.

Concepts
Engineering design cycle:
1.Identify the need 2.Research the Problem 3.Develop possible solutions 4.Select the most promising solution 5.Construct a prototype 6.Test and evaluate the prototype 7.Communicate the design 8.Redesign 9.Repeat |
How we incorporated it:
1. We brainstormed as a class, picked our favorites 2. We got in a group where we did research 3. We sat around talking and brainstorming for a couple days. 4. at the end of day two the the project we had our idea divided up the work. 5. Ryan coded his app, and I worked on the hardware to link up with it 6. We didn't really have time for this step. 7. Marslina crated out presentation shown above to help us show off our idea to the class. 8/9. we didn't get a chance for these steps. |
Circuitry: I have a lot of basic knowledge in this area, so the circuits i created where not hard. I had to make something simple to get a signal from the GPIO (General Purpose Input Output) pins on the Raspberry Pi to my desk lamp.
Programming: Ryan had to use is experience in coding to make our Android app. I don't really know the ins and out, but he made an semi-functioning app in a couple weeks!

Reflection
This Project was a lot of work but a ton of fun. I spent spent almost all of my time in the afternoons and evening during this project to come up with a way to control the Light. My original idea was to use an Arduino board, but then my dad let me used his Raspberry Pi which was infinitely easier. I learned how use Linux computers, and some very basic knowledge of terminal commands and coding. I also learned how to ask for help; without my dad i could have never finished.
We turned out a awesome product and it wasn't even finished, we got a lot done by breaking up the work and allowing people to use their strengths. However, we split up so there want much communication or collaboration in the group. We almost had vastly different work loads for different people. Kai did almost nothing were as me and Ryan worked like mules to meet the deadline. We also never finished, but I think if we had had a another week or so it would have been an amazing product!
